Guttering Birmingham: Cast Iron Renewal and uPVC Replacement

Guttering on a Birmingham roof. Guttering work in Birmingham divides between renewing modern plastic runs and repairing the cast iron rainwater goods that period terraces still carry, and the two need entirely different approaches. Book a free on-site survey and guttering is quoted as an itemised scope, agreed before anyone starts. Covered here: Guttering · Cast iron gutter.

  1. On site in 45 to 90 minutesEvery elevation photographed from ground level and ladder, and the roof void inspected from inside.
  2. A written report in two daysDefects separated into immediate, this season and monitor, with photographs against each.
  3. An itemised written scopeAgreed and signed before anyone starts, with no variation without a new figure.

Crews work across 8 Birmingham and Solihull districts: Sutton Coldfield, Harborne, Edgbaston, Moseley, Solihull, Erdington, Kings Heath and Selly Oak. Postcodes outside that run are quoted case by case rather than turned away.

  • Free survey No charge for the survey, and none if the report says nothing needs doing.
  • Own crews The people who survey the roof are the people who lay it. No subcontracting, no lead resale.
  • Written scope first Quoted as an itemised scope agreed before work starts.
  • Workmanship warranty Issued in writing on completion. Sole trader, no scheme registration.

Clearance, realignment, joint sealing, section replacement and full renewal are different jobs. Which applies depends on the material.

A continuous fall to the outlet is reset whenever brackets are renewed.

What we fix

What guttering work do we carry out?

Guttering work covers clearance, realigning sagged runs, remaking failed joints, replacing individual sections, and full renewal including downpipes. Cast iron is restored where it is sound rather than replaced by default.

  • The cast iron gutter is descaled, primed and repainted with joints remade, retaining the original profile; the failure mode of the cast iron gutter is corrosion at joints and fractures under retained debris weight.
  • Services offered: clearance, realignment, joint sealing, section replacement, full renewal

How it works

The gutter is fixed to something.

  1. Retained debris loads a cast iron run which fractures at its joints.
  2. Sagged brackets remove the fall so a cleared gutter still holds water.
  3. A conservation designation restricts profile substitution on visible elevations.
  4. Seamless aluminium matches the cast profile without the corrosion.

Straight answers

Can cast iron guttering be repaired?

Yes, in most cases. Sound cast iron is descaled, primed, repainted and its joints remade, retaining the original ogee profile. Replacement is reserved for runs that have fractured or corroded through.

The failure mode of uPVC gutter is bracket sag, thermal movement at joints, and UV embrittlement. A continuous gradient to the outlet, reset when brackets are renewed. Renewed with the run, discharging to a gully or soakaway rather than onto ground.

  • Ogee profile significance: the period profile; a half-round replacement changes the elevation's appearance

What are the options for replacing a run?

Three options replace a failed run: uPVC at lowest cost, seamless extruded aluminium in a cast-iron profile with no joints, and new cast iron where a conservation condition requires it. Profile choice affects the elevation's appearance.

Designated streets frequently require cast iron or a cast-iron-effect profile. Twice yearly, after leaf fall and again in spring. Seamless extruded runs matching cast iron profiles without the corrosion.

  • Access: ladder for clearance and short repairs; scaffold or tower for full renewal

Why does a new gutter still overflow?

New guttering hung on the existing bracket line inherits the old fall. Where those brackets have sagged or the fascia has dropped, the run holds water from the day it is fitted. The gradient is set from scratch.

What does guttering work cost?

Guttering is priced per linear metre for renewal and per elevation for clearance, with downpipes itemised separately. Access equipment is quoted as its own line where the run sits above single-storey height.

Most contractors quote replacement; descaling, remaking joints and repainting retains the original and often costs less.

Checking the boards behind

Swapping ogee for half-round visibly alters a period frontage and can breach conservation conditions. Extruded on site to any length in a cast-iron profile — no joints to fail, no corrosion, period appearance.
