What Blocked Gutters Do to Brickwork, Timbers and Interiors

A blocked gutter is a rainwater channel whose flow path is obstructed. What it costs is not the gutter.

What happens if gutters are blocked?
Four things follow a blocked gutter: water sheets down the wall head, the fascia behind the gutter decays, saturated masonry admits damp internally and spalls in frost, and retained debris loads the run until its joints fracture.

How can you tell from the ground?
Look for staining on the brickwork directly below the gutter line, moss or algae growing on that wall face, plants rooted in the channel itself, and water visibly overshooting the gutter during rainfall rather than reaching the downpipe.

How often should gutters be cleared?
Gutters need clearing twice a year: once after autumn leaf fall and once in spring. Properties with overhanging trees need more frequent attention, because a single autumn can fill a run completely.
Overhanging trees means shorten the clearance interval substantially. Ground-level signs means staining below the gutter line, moss on the wall, plants growing in the channel; the cast iron gutter corrodes at joints and fractures under the weight of retained debris.
Why does a clear gutter still overflow?
A gutter that has lost its fall holds standing water even with no debris in it. Sagged brackets and decayed fixings drop the run below its gradient, so clearing the channel changes nothing until the fall is reset.
Reduces leaf entry, still requires inspection, and clogs at the guard itself.

Do gutter guards work?
Partly. Guards reduce how much leaf matter enters the channel, but debris then collects on the guard surface instead, and fine silt still passes through. Inspection remains necessary at the same interval.
