What is a dry ridge system?

A dry ridge system fixes each ridge unit mechanically to a timber ridge batten, with a ventilated roll closing the gap beneath. Retention depends on a screw or clamp rather than on mortar adhesion, so it does not degrade.

A ridge batten is a timber member fixed along the apex providing the fixing substrate. A ventilated roll is a filler closing the gap under the units while permitting high-level airflow.

How it works

The verge is on the same clock.

How is it fitted?

Remove the existing ridge units and mortar, fix a ridge batten along the apex, lay the ventilated roll over it, then refix each unit mechanically through the roll into the batten. Sound existing units are reused.

  • Current slating and tiling practice requires mechanical fixing of ridge and hip units; a dry verge is the equivalent mechanical system at the gable edge, replacing mortar pointing.

Why not just rebed the ridge in mortar?

Rebedding restores the exact detail that failed. Mortar adhesion degrades through thermal cycling and frost from the day it cures, so the same loss recurs. Mechanical fixing removes adhesion from the equation entirely.

The secondary benefit of the dry ridge is high-level ventilation added to the roof void as part of the installation. The maintenance of the dry ridge is no repointing, no rebedding, no recurring mortar failure.

Does it change how the roof looks?

No. The existing ridge units are refitted where sound, so the roof line and colour stay as they were. Only the fixing method beneath changes, and the ventilated roll is not visible from ground level.

The installation is fitted as a standalone job on an otherwise sound roof, or during a recovering. The hip is hips fixed by the same method, with hip irons at the foot.

Can it be fitted without a full re-roof?

Yes. Dry ridge is regularly fitted as a standalone job to an otherwise sound covering. It requires access along the ridge line only, which makes it a substantially smaller job than any recovering.

Dry verge at the gable edge

The roll adds high-level airflow, which resolves void condensation on roofs whose eaves inlets are blocked — a second problem solved by one job. Dry ridge is commonly presented as part of a re-roof only; it is fitted perfectly well to an otherwise sound roof.

The existing ridge tiles are reused where sound, so the roof's appearance is unchanged and material cost is low. Mortar pointing at the gable degrades on the same clock, so the two jobs belong on the same scaffold.
