Minimum Roof Pitch by Covering Type: The Fixing Limits

Every roof covering has an angle below which it stops shedding water reliably, and that limit — not preference or budget — decides which materials a given roof can actually carry. What is the minimum pitch for each covering?

Each covering type carries its own stated minimum, and single-lap tiles carry a figure set by the manufacturer for that specific profile. Slate and plain tile limits vary with unit size and headlap rather than sitting at one fixed angle.

Why does headlap change the minimum?

Headlap is the overlap between courses. Increasing it lengthens the path water must travel to pass the covering, so a greater lap allows a shallower pitch. Pitch and lap are set together rather than independently.

A slated or tiled roof is not waterproof; it is water-shedding, and it works because each unit laps the head of the one two courses below. That overlap is the headlap. As pitch falls, wind drives water further up the slope before gravity carries it off, so the headlap has to increase to compensate. Below a covering's minimum pitch no achievable headlap is enough, which is why the minimum exists and why laying a covering below it fails regardless of workmanship.
