Birds and Pests Under a Roof: Proofing the Eaves and Verges

Birds and squirrels enter a roof through gaps at the eaves and verges that were never meant to be open, and closing those gaps has to be done without closing the ventilation path that shares them. Expanding foam and sealant are the common wrong answers: they close the air inlet along with the gap and turn a proofing job into a condensation problem. Squirrels enlarge what is already open rather than making new holes, which is why proofing works once the existing openings are found.

How do birds and squirrels get into a roof?

Three openings account for most entry: the gap at the eaves where the covering meets the roofline, failed mortar or missing units at the verge, and spaces beneath displaced ridge tiles. All three existed before the animal arrived.

How are the gaps closed?

Fit a profiled eaves comb along the wall head, mesh irregular openings at verges and abutments, refix or replace displaced ridge and verge units, and confirm the ventilation path remains continuous once everything is closed.

Why can't you just seal the gap?

The eaves gap carries the roof void's air inlet as well as the pest entry. Sealing it with foam or mastic closes the ventilation path, and the roof then produces condensation instead of birds.

Active nests of wild birds are legally protected during the season. The solution of the eaves comb is a profiled filler closing the gap while permitting designed airflow. Mesh is used at verges and irregular openings where a comb does not fit.

When can proofing be carried out?

Proofing is scheduled outside the nesting season, because active wild bird nests are legally protected. Work planned in advance for autumn avoids both the legal constraint and the birds returning to an established site.

Blocking pest entry must not block the eaves air inlet. Damage is displaced units, soiled insulation, blocked outlets and gnawed cabling.
