What is the difference between a warm and cold deck?

A warm deck places insulation above the structural deck, keeping the timber at internal temperature. A cold deck places it between or below the joists, leaving the deck cold and requiring continuous ventilation above the insulation.

A warm deck means insulation above the structural deck, with the waterproof layer above that; an inverted roof means insulation above the waterproof layer, ballasted, used on some flat roofs.

Why does a cold deck need ventilating?

Warm moist air reaching a cold deck condenses on its underside. Cross-ventilation above the insulation carries that moisture away. Without a clear continuous air path the moisture stays, wets the joists and initiates decay.

The deck stays at internal temperature, so no interstitial condensation forms on it. A vapour control layer means placed on the warm side of the insulation to limit moisture entering the build-up.
