Is Moss on a Roof a Problem? When Growth Actually Matters
Moss on a roof matters when it holds water against the covering or blocks the drainage path, and the removal method does more damage than the moss in most cases where a homeowner intervenes. Moss is bryophyte growth colonising the surface and joints of a covering. Most of it does not need removing, and this page exists to say when it does.

Should you pressure wash a mossy roof?
No. Pressure washing strips the surface of cast tiles, drives water past the headlap into the roof, and dislodges ridge and verge bedding. It is the single most common way a homeowner damages a sound covering.
Hand scraping means growth removed by hand from the ridge downward, then the roof left to dry; a biocide is kills residual growth and slows regrowth without mechanical disturbance. A zinc or copper strip means run-off inhibits regrowth on the slope below.
How is moss removed safely?
Moss is removed by hand, working from the ridge downward, then the gutters are cleared of the debris and a biocide is applied to kill residual growth. No water is driven under the covering at any stage.

How do you stop it coming back?
