Should old boards be capped or replaced?
Old boards are replaced rather than capped. Capping fixes plastic over decayed timber, hiding the rot rather than removing it and sealing moisture against the rafter feet. Full replacement takes the timber off and exposes what is behind it.
Timber removed to the rafter feet, condition checked, new board fixed to sound timber. A ventilated soffit means continuous airflow inlet into the roof void at the wall head; an over-fascia vent means restores the inlet where the soffit cannot be ventilated.
Why does ventilation matter in a soffit?
The soffit carries the low-level air inlet that the roof void depends on. A replacement fitted without continuous ventilation closes that inlet, and the void then produces condensation on the underside of the covering through winter.
Decayed ends discovered only when the fascia comes off. The service life of uPVC is long, colourfast in modern grades, and maintenance-free.
How do you know the roofline needs work?
Four signs indicate roofline work: paint flaking or timber visibly soft, guttering pulling away from the fascia, birds or squirrels entering at the eaves, and damp staining on the wall head below the overhang.
